A Study on the Relationship between Emotional Labor and Organizational Effectiveness of the Nursing Officer

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand the emotional labor of nursing officers by proving the effect of emotional labor on organizational effectiveness.

Methods: From 6. 15. 2008 to 7. 15. 2008, questionnaires were distributed to military nursing officers who were on duty at military hospitals nationwide and at divisional dispensaries of the 652 copies of the questionaire distributed, 591 copies were returned completed. The data was analyzed using at-test, ANOVA and the Pearson Correlation coefficient.

Results: There was not a statistically significant difference in the degree of the emotional labor according to the subjects¡¯ general properties, including subjects¡¯ position in the military, education, rank, marriage status, presence of roommates, or service area. The relation between the degree of military nursing officers¡¯ emotional labor and the organizational personnel¡¯s duty satisfaction levels proved to be negative. The degree of the nursing officers¡¯ emotional labor and the personnel¡¯s organizational absorption showed a statistically significant negative relation. A positive relation was confirmed between the nursing officers¡¯ degree of emotional labor and intention to leave the job, which indicates individual intention to stay in the present work situation or leave it.

Conclusion: This research proved that the degree of emotional labor bears a significant relationship to the organizational effectiveness of military nursing officers in military hospitals nationwide and divisional dispensaries. Therefore, with regards to organizational supervision, management of the degree of emotional labor among personnel is important, and this study is meaningful in providing a foundation from which a realization of the importance of developing of a mediation program and leadership types in middle management can be accomplished.
